PARIS-TRIPOLI-DAKAR 1991
The 1990/91 running of the Paris-Tripoli-Dakar, the 13th running of this great
motor sport adventure, was the most challenging yet, with Mitsubishi setting out
once more to maintain its amazing record of success and repeat its 1985 victory.
To this end, the team drafted in its most successful world championship
contender to that date, Kenneth Eriksson, more used to comparatively smooth
gravel tracks and asphalt roads in his Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. However, like
many other world class drivers drafted in to take part in the "Dakar", he found the Pajero helped smooth his passage by
inspiring confidence with its superior performance and amazing handling and
reliability - qualities of Mitsubishi with which Eriksson was already familiar.
The all-new Pajero Prototype was already a proven winner before it turned a
wheel on the 13th "Dakar" having taken victory on the Australian Safari with
Shinozuka at the wheel. But the developments were moving at a frenetic pace and
the machine which started from Paris in this year was the most advanced ever.
Lartigue, Shinozuka and Fontenay joined Eriksson for the latest gruelling
challenge through northern and western Africa. Once again, Mitsubishi dominated
the results list with three machines in the top five, Lartigue in second place,
Fontenay third, and newcomer Eriksson in fourth. It was a superb result, but it
turned out to be simply a prelude for one of the most fantastic victories
ever...
